Trend: Serpentine

One of the most prominent (and one of our favorite!) trends for fall '12 takes its inspiration from the reptile kingdom.  We are seeing everything from snakeskin printed denim to serpentine accessories and embossed animal-inspired textures.

Line We Love: Pyrrha

From their Vancouver studio, jewelry designers Wade Papin and Danielle Wilmore handcraft the heraldic wax seal talismans that have become the Pyrrha signature. “Jewelers traditionally try to make everything look perfect, say Danielle and Wade, “but we like to show the maker’s hand. We celebrate the original cracks in the waxes.”  The pair designed the Pyrrha wax seal jewelry collection after they came across a box of 19th century wax seals. “Making jewelry out of them was inspired by a desire to give the fragile wax seals new life and permanence.” say Danielle and Wade. The handcrafted, thoughtful pieces are a striking contrast to the glut of overseas factory made, mass produced jewelry that is so common in their industry. Wade and Danielle explain, “everything seems to be cranked out at a staggering pace and then left for dead. Because we live in such a throwaway society, it’s necessary to create some things that can be kept."

Their collection is featured regularly on TV shows such as Once Upon a Time, Weeds, Sons of Anarchy, House, CSI, Fringe and Supernatural and has appeared in publications such as Instyle, Billboard, Vogue, O Magazine, Nylon, The New York Times, Elle and Marie Claire. Celebrity wearers of Pyrrha's handcrafted wax seal jewelry include Katie Holmes, Rooney Mara, Taylor Swift, Glee's Dianna Agron, Dexter's C. Michael Hall, Jeremy Renner, Brad Pitt, Scarlett Johansson, Ryan Reynolds, Halle Berry, Reese Witherspoon, Julia Roberts and Julie Benz.

Look We Love

Macrame:

An art of textile fabrication using a series of knots, macrame dates back to the 13th century and was widely used in Victorian times as well as the neo-hippie era of the 1970's.  We at A20 have recently discovered our love of modernized macrame.

A belted maxi dress like this offering by Sanctuary gives macrame a tropical vibe, striking the perfect note for summertime or resort travels.

This handmade owl necklace by local Greenville, SC designer Native Rainbow balances sweetness and edge with its pastel leather.

Just a hint on the shoulders of this Ella Moss top adds depth and texture to an otherwise simple ensemble.

Layered over feminine nudes, like on this pencil skirt by Free People, macrame takes on a feminine lace appearance that is perfect for a day at the marketing firm or an evening out with girlfriends.

Our Spring Must-Haves

Rebecca Minkoff blazer - This color is beautiful on every skin tone and works perfectly with my neutral wardrobe.

Rebecca Minkoff bag - I'm over huge bags where your keys and wallet get lost.  These petite bags are versatile and perfect for any woman on-the-go.

Citizens of Humanity Thompson ivory jean - The Thompson is my favorite skinny fit we carry and this ivory wash is soft without being too preppy.

Rebecca Taylor dress - I'd wear this with booties and a different belt to edge the feminine look up a bit.
Rebecca Taylor sandal - The perfect neutral shoe for spring, with a platform for added comfort.

Twelfth Street cardigan - I loathe the feeling of cold air blowing on me, so this lightweight cardigan is perfect for stowing in my bag for flights or a chilly restaurant.

Lainey M. scarf - This colorful print reminds me of sipping lemonade in a spring garden!

Erin Fetherston dress - I adore Erin Fetherston's aesthetic: mod with French influences, but always feminine.

Joe's Jeans skinny - The perfect ultra skinny fit, these tonal leopard printed jeans look awesome with this spring's pastel and neon color trends.

Rebecca Minkoff sandal - The perfect pink.  You can't be in a bad mood with this color on your feet!

Artist in Residence

Meet A20's artist in residence, Lizzie Romanstine.  Over the past few years, many of our customers have become loyal fans of her line, Native Rainbow.  Originally hailing from South Carolina, Lizzie felt the pull of west coast sunshine and moved to pursue a degree in fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles.  She made her residence in California for the next decade where she found herself inspired by the desert landscape, artwork by Georgia O'Keefe, riding her horse and her Native American heritage.  In late 2011, she decided to move cross-country to be closer to family and open an animal sanctuary.  You can now find her most days setting up shop at A20 working on everything from handmade jewelry to vibrant scarf dresses.

Spring/Summer '12 Denim Trends

Prints
We are still seeing loads of colored denim for SS12 (can't wait to break out our macaron colored styles when it warms up!), so the natural progression has been to printed denim.  We are in love with vintage floral styles like this pair from Citizens of Humanity.

The Audrey Jean
If colors and prints are too feminine for your tastes, take inspiration from the Audrey Hepburn inspired denim cuts available this season.  With a slimming straight leg shape, higher rise and slightly cropped length, this style is thoroughly classic and sophisticated.

To shop our extensive selection of denim fits, CLICK HERE or visit our West End boutique in downtown Greenville, SC for a one-on-one jean fitting.
